Physical Description: The Windemere Preserve protects 1,160 acres as part of the 2320-acre Windemere development in the City of San Ramon, Contra Costa County. Conservation Purpose: The Preserve was established to provide habitat for the Federally Endangered kit fox (Vulpes velos), Federally Threatened California tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense) and the Federally Threatened California red-legged frog (Rana aurora). Cattle grazing is used to maintain short grass habitats that are essential for these species.

Habitat Types: The Preserve is almost entirely annual grassland typical of the coast range. Wetlands and other waters on the site include stock ponds and natural ponds, over 70 freshwater springs and seeps, wetland basins, and perennial and ephemeral streams.
