Physical Description: The 1,427-acre Borden Ranch Preserve is located east of the intersection of Borden and Clay Station Roads in Southern Sacramento County.
Habitat Types: The preserve is primarily annual grassland typical of the region, with a gently undulating landscape laced with vernal pools (58 acres). The pools are classified as northern hardpan vernal pools. The preserve also contains 15.3 acres of seasonal wetlands, 0.5 acres of intermittent (ephemeral) drainages, and 1.4 acres of stock ponds.
Conservation Purpose: The preserve was established in 1996 by the AKT Development as mitigation for vernal pool impacts from vineyard development. The conservation area was established for the benefit of vernal pool associated species. The vernal pools provide habitat for the Federally Endangered vernal pool tadpole shrimp (Lepidurus packardi), the Federally Threatened vernal pool fairy shrimp (Branchinecta lynchi), and the State endangered Boggs Lake hedge-hyssop (Gratiola heterosepala). Western spadefoot toads (Spea hamondii), a species of special concern are also known to occur on the Preserve.
