Physical Description:
The Carlsbad Oaks Habitat Conservation Area is located on both sides of the intersection of Faraday Avenue and El Fuerte Street and east of the Carlsbad Safety Center in the City of Carlsbad, California. The Conservation area is approximately 200 acres which support dense vegetation and steep slopes and has spectacular plant and animal diversity. Agua Hedionda Creek runs through the site.
Habitat Types and Sensitive Species:
The conservation area supports a number of habitat types, including coast live oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, chaparral and native grassland. It supports sensitive plant and animal species, such as the coastal California gnatcatcher, San Diego thornimint, and thread-leaved brodiaea.
Management:
Management is primarily focused on removing nonnative plant species, estimating plant and animal population numbers, habitat assessments and public outreach.
Formation and History:
The Center received the properties in 2006 and 2007 from TechBuilt Construction as part of their mitigation obligations for the Carlsbad Oaks North Business Park.
Public Access:
There is one public trail on the property. It commences on El Fuerte, about 100 yards south of the pump station and public parking lot and terminates about 1 mile to the east near Melrose Avenue. The City of Carlsbad maintains this trail.
