Physical Description:
The Rosemary’s Mountain Habitat Conservation Areas are comprised of 3 distinct parcels located in Oceanside, Fallbrook and Valley Center for a total of approximately 104 acres. The North River parcel is located along North River Road about 2 miles east of Vandegrift Blvd, in the City of Oceanside, California. The Arroyo Toad parcel is located along State Route 76, about 1 mile east of Interstate 15 in Fallbrook, California. The Granite Rocks parcel is located along Old Castle Road, about 2 miles east of Interstate 15 in Valley Center, California.
Habitat Types and Sensitive Species:
The North River parcel protects of southern willow scrub. The Arroyo Toad parcel protects of southern willow scrub and coastal sage scrub. Both of the North River and Arroyo Road parcels are approximately 13 acres. The Granite Rocks parcel protects approximately 78 acres coastal sage scrub and chaparral. The sites support sensitive animal species including the coastal California gnatcatcher, the least Bell’s vireo and the arroyo toad.
Management:
The North River and Arroyo Toad parcels are currently being restored to native habitat. The North River parcel was highly disturbed southern willow scrub. The Arroyo Toad parcel was agricultural land when acquired and is now being converted back its native state of willow woodland and coastal sage scrub to support arroyo toads. The Center patrols all parcels and is beginning to collect baseline biological data.
Formation and History:
The parcels were set aside in 2009 by Granite Construction as mitigation for the Rosemary’s Mountain Quarry project in Fallbrook.
Public Access:
No public access is allowed on any of the parcels.
