Buena Vista Creek

Habitat Types and Sensitive Species: The Reserve supports a number of habitat types, including southern riparian forest, coastal sage scrub, native and nonnative grassland and fallow agricultural land. It supports sensitive plant and animal species, such as the coastal California gnatcatcher, least Bell’s vireo and thread-leaved brodiaea.

Habitat Restoration

Management: Management is primarily focused on habitat restoration and removing nonnative plant species. Since the Reserve was established, thousands of nonnative species have been removed or treated with herbicide. Additionally, 4 acres within the Reserve of agricultural land are currently undergoing habitat restoration activities.

Formation and History: The California Department of Fish and Game owns the property which was set aside in March 2007. The Center holds the endowment and manages the property for the Department. Other partners involved in the management of the property include Preserve Calavera and the Carlsbad Watershed Network.

Public Access: Public access is not currently allowed. Trail planning is in progress. Private tours can be scheduled.
